Wicklow TD John Brady says he is disgusted that the planned refurbishment and re-opening of the Wicklow District Courthouse, has once again been pushed down the road.
The courthouse ceased holding District Court sittings in 2010 having previously ended Circuit Court sittings back in 2008. But due to huge pressures on the court service in Bray, a decision was taken to reopen the courthouse in Wicklow Town, with a plan to extend and refurbish the building to provide a larger 4 courtroom venue, with a range of facilities for staff, the judiciary and legal professionals.
At the beginning of 2018 the Minister for Justice said the works would be included in the ten-year capital plan, with some demolition works needed to facilitate a planned extension.
But Deputy Brady says, three years later and no works have commenced and the latest reply from the Minister, fails to commit to any timeframe as to when the work will start. He says government TD’s in Wicklow need to use their positions to highlight the need for this works to be prioritised.
