Dr Holohan stepped aside as the state's Chief Medical Officer last week to spend more time with his family as his wife receives palliative care.
Dr. Tony Holohan ended last Thursday's briefing with a statement, in which he said his wife Emer was admitted for treatment for a form of blood cancer last weekend.
Taoiseach Micheal Martin has expressed his thanks to him , saying the country owes him a great debt of gratitude for his service to the state during the COVID-19 emergency.
The motion was proposed by Lord Mayor of Dublin Hazel Chu.
