Nina Carberry chats with Ed Finn

37 minutes | Sunday, 29 January 2023

Nina Carberry was born into a famous horse-racing family and she is widely considered one of the greatest amateur riders of all time and enjoyed a terrific 17-year career in the saddle before her retirement from the sport in 2018.

In 2005, Nina became the first female jockey in 18 years to win a race at the Cheltenham Festival when she rode to victory on Dabiroun in the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices' Handicap Hurdle. This was just the beginning for Nina, who went on to have another seven Chelthnam wins throughout the course of her hugely successful career.

Nina also followed in the footsteps of her dad and brothers when she claimed victory in the 2011 Irish Grand National on Organisedconfusion. Some would argue Nina was always destined for success with her dad being none other than Tommy Carberry. Tommy won the Grand National as both a jockey and trainer. He also won the Cheltenham Gold Cup as a jockey on two occasions. Two of Nina's four brothers, Paul and Philip, also followed in their father's footsteps. Paul had a hugely successful horse-racing career and is considered one of the country's greatest jockeys. She won Dancing with the Stars in 2022 and Ireland's Fittest Family Celebrity Special in 2020 and later becamea coach on the team.
Nina also has her own business - Nina Carberry Racing where she enjoys buying and selling horses for clients worldwide and she is also brand ambassador for cosmetics and book publishing companies.
